Let’s dive into making mermaid tail cupcakes. This mermaid tail design is very popular and surprisingly easy to recreate at home.

Start by gathering a mermaid tail silicone mold, fondant or gumpaste, toothpicks, gel food coloring, a small paintbrush, and a bit of powdered sugar to prevent sticking.

Lightly dust the inside of the mold with powdered sugar, then tap out any excess. Press a small piece of fondant into the cavity, being careful to press into all the details.

These molds are flexible, so invert the mold gently to release the tail. Use a toothpick to loosen any areas that might be sticking.
Once all the mermaid tails are unmolded, insert a toothpick halfway up each tail so it will anchor into the cupcake later. Let the tails dry for about 8 hours or overnight until firm.

When the tails are set, prepare your food coloring. I used teal for the body and gold for the fins. On a palette combine a drop of gel color with a few drops of vodka to create an edible paint; the alcohol helps it dry quickly. Use a clean, food-safe brush to paint each tail.

Because of the alcohol, the color dries in about five minutes. If you prefer not to use alcohol, you can mix the food coloring with water instead; it will take longer to dry but is still effective.
Now prepare the cupcakes. Bake and cool them completely before decorating. I made vanilla cupcakes and added custom wrappers for a polished look.

For frosting, I used American buttercream tinted the same teal shade as the tails. Using a star piping tip, pipe the frosting with an up-and-down motion to create texture and volume.

To place the mermaid tail, gently push the exposed end of the toothpick into the center of the frosted cupcake so the tail stands upright.

Finish the cupcakes with a sprinkle mix. I like a combination of sanding sugar, nonpareils, and rock candy in varying sizes and colors for a sparkly ocean floor effect.

Use a small spoon to sprinkle the decorations around the mermaid tail so they nestle into the frosting.

And that’s it — mermaid tail cupcakes ready to serve.

A quick note: fondant can soften or melt in hot conditions, so these cupcakes are best for indoor events or cool days.
I love how these cupcakes paired with my mermaid tail cake for a cohesive Under the Sea theme.

Mermaid kisses and best wishes for your party — have fun decorating!
