We’re air fryer fans, and air fryer French fries are one of our favorites: simple, satisfying potato strips made from Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, crisped to golden perfection with circulating hot air.
After testing many potatoes and techniques, we landed on a method that’s consistent and easy to follow.
We use a short ingredient list and clear steps to deliver reliably crispy fries every time.

Ingredients for Air Fryer French Fries
Keep it simple. You only need a few items:
- 2 pounds Russet potatoes — washed, peeled, and cut into ¼ inch strips.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil — helps create a crisp exterior.
- Salt and pepper — to taste.
That’s all. Minimal ingredients, maximum flavor.
Tips for Perfect Air Fryer French Fries
Cut the potatoes into even ¼ inch strips so they cook uniformly. Inconsistent thickness leads to uneven cooking and soggy pieces.
Soak the cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove surface starch. This step improves crispness—soak for 30 minutes or up to overnight if you have the time.
Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. Give the fries space so hot air can circulate around each piece. Cook in batches when needed to prevent limp, greasy fries.
Season the fries immediately after they come out of the air fryer while they are still hot so the salt and pepper adhere better.
