What makes this recipe so yummy

  • Using a boxed brownie mix speeds up the process while still delivering great flavor; you can also use a homemade brownie recipe if you prefer.
  • The spider web decoration is forgiving—pipe a simple spiral of frosting and drag a toothpick outward a few times to create a web even if you’re not an artist.
  • They’re a fun, crowd-pleasing dessert for Halloween parties and get-togethers.

  • Step 1: Prepare the boxed brownie mix according to package directions.
  • Step 2: Pour the batter into a square pan and bake in a preheated oven for about 25 minutes.
  • Step 3: Cool the baked brownies completely on a rack, then cut into 9 even squares.
  • Step 4: Make the frosting: beat butter until creamy, add powdered sugar a cup at a time, then add vanilla, salt, and heavy cream until it reaches a pipeable consistency.
  • Step 5: Pipe a spiral of icing on each brownie. With a toothpick, drag lines from the center outward several times to form a spider web.

Hint: Keep a toothpick ready and work before the icing sets. Dragging the toothpick while the icing is still soft creates clean web lines.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Make brownies from scratch if you prefer a homemade base.
  • Add semisweet chocolate chips to the batter for extra chocolate pockets.
  • Store-bought icing pouches can be used to decorate if you want a shortcut; results may vary.
  • Cream cheese or white chocolate frosting are tasty alternatives to the butter-based icing.

How to store leftovers

Store finished brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

They freeze well; freeze plain brownies and add the icing after thawing for best results.

Mel’s kitchen notes

Avoid overbeating the brownie batter; too much air will make it rise and then sink in the center. If you don’t have a piping bag, use a resealable plastic bag and snip a tiny corner to pipe the icing.
