Transforming Family Recipes Into Cakes: From Plate to Pastry

We talk a lot about inspiration here at Half Baked. Our site exists to spark ideas, and time and time again we see a great cake can be inspired by almost anything—a wedding invitation, a pillow, jewelry, or a pretty plate. Today’s design grew from a collection of ladylike stoneware plates from Anthropologie. Usually cake sits on a plate, but in this case the plates inspired the cake’s entire look.

Jessica Harris of Jessicakes created this elegant cake for a collaborative photo shoot with Dani of Weddings Fresh and a talented Portland-area team. The design is striking in its white-on-white detail: layered textures, clean modern lines and a soft, romantic sensibility. Finished with a neat ruffle trim and a delicate flower on top, the cake captures a refined, unforgettable look.

A few notes from Jessica about her design:

“When Dani asked me to create a cake for this wedding shoot I was thrilled. She wanted something feminine, modern and white. She showed me the plates she planned to use from Anthropologie, and I began sketching ideas.”

I absolutely adore the individual cakes at each place setting—what a statement. Jessica also shared helpful notes about her technique:

“From the start I knew the cake would be white on white, so I wanted to introduce varied textures. That’s how the pearl tier and reverse ruffles came about. The ruffles were the trickiest part; if I had time to redo them I’d make them a touch thinner and more delicate. To make the ruffles I mixed gumtex into rolled fondant, cut strips about 1.5 inches wide, and marked each placement on the cake with toothpicks. I left the toothpicks in while wrapping the fondant strips, then used them to shape the ruffles before removing them and refining the edges with my thumb and index finger. It took practice, but I loved the modern feel they gave the cake.”

“I want to especially thank Dani for the inspiration and for putting together a beautiful shoot, and Diana for the gorgeous photos I’ll be able to keep forever.”

We’re grateful to Jessica for sharing both her design and her process. Wishing everyone a happy Friday and a wonderful weekend!
