I’m excited to share this lemonade recipe because it’s simple, refreshing, and always a crowd-pleaser. Friends and family request it whenever I bring it to parties and cookouts, so I’m finally posting it here. If you follow me on Instagram, you might remember the kitchen video with my Aunt Tina and me creating this drink.
With warmer days ahead, now is the perfect time to make a big pitcher to cool down after workouts, hikes, or afternoons on the porch. Here’s my take on the Best Lemonade — easy, bright, and made with just a few quality ingredients.
New Bostian neighbors
When I moved into my third apartment in the summer of 2019, it was scorching and humid. My friend Tina helped me carry furniture up the street, and when we arrived we were greeted by our new neighbors, a young newlywed couple from Boston. They offered us cold lemonade — a kind gesture that I still remember fondly.
The lemonade that day was lightly sweet and herbal, not the syrupy version my Aunt Tina prefers. Tina was disappointed, but we were grateful for anything cold to drink. They had prepared a whole pitcher and left it on their porch, and that simple hospitality stuck with me.
Ingredients you’ll need:
- Water: Spring water (about 1 gallon)
- Lemon: Fresh lemon juice (about 1 cup) and sliced lemon peelings
- Sweetener: White sugar (about 4 cups) or a substitute
Aunt Tina — “Boy, keep them peelings” story
Quick story: when I first made lemonade, I tossed the lemon peelings in the trash. Aunt Tina caught me and yelled, “Boy, what are you doing? Don’t throw them away; use them!” She insisted that keeping the peelings transforms the flavor. After using them for years, I understand exactly why — the peelings add fragrant citrus oils and depth, and they help you get more from each lemon. So don’t discard the peelings; add them to the pitcher.

Benefits of a citrus juicer
A citrus juicer helps extract the maximum juice from each lemon, saving time and fruit. Hand-squeezing can be tiring and less efficient — a juicer gives you more yield with less effort. There are even hands-free models that are helpful if you don’t want to squeeze manually or have limited hand strength. Using a juicer saves time and gets the most juice out of every lemon.
Spring water is a must
Because this recipe uses only a few ingredients, each one matters. Use a good spring water — it makes a noticeable difference compared with tap water, which can add off-flavors. Pick a clean-tasting spring water for the best results.

Sugar and alternatives
I prefer white granulated sugar for a clean, bright sweetness. Use a good-quality sugar and adjust to taste. If you want alternatives, try one of these:
- Brown sugar: Adds a subtle depth without drastically changing the lemonade’s profile — my top substitute.
- Honey: A natural sweetener with its own flavor; use if you don’t mind a honey note.
- Raw sugar: Another option if you prefer less processed sweeteners; it will slightly change texture and color.
How to make homemade lemonade
- Slice 4 to 6 lemons in half and squeeze out about 1 cup of lemon juice using a citrus juicer or your hands.
- Remove any seeds from the juice.
- Pour the lemon juice into a pitcher.
- Slice the lemon peelings and add them to the pitcher. The peelings add aroma and flavor.

- Add the sugar to the pitcher.
- Pour in about 1 gallon of spring water and stir well. Stir for at least a minute to ensure the sugar dissolves completely, since it tends to sink to the bottom.

- Chill the lemonade in the refrigerator before serving.
Tips for best results
- Make it ahead: Lemonade tastes better after a few hours of resting so the flavors meld.
- Remove seeds: Strain or pick out seeds to keep every sip smooth and fuss-free.
- Include lemon flesh: Bits of lemon flesh left from juicing add extra brightness — include them for more citrus flavor.
