This White Bread Machine Bread is a family recipe we’ve relied on for more than twenty years. It’s straightforward, uses common pantry ingredients, and yields a tender, flavorful loaf that guests and family always praise.

If you don’t yet own a bread machine, it’s worth considering. A good automatic machine handles mixing, kneading, and rising, so you don’t have to. The machine I use has been in daily service for years and produces reliable results. When the dough comes out of the machine you can shape it into rolls or other forms and bake if a different shape is desired.

Use quality all-purpose flour—Bob’s Red Mill works well for this recipe. If the machine’s mixing stage produces a very stiff, dry dough, add a tablespoon of water at a time until the dough smooths out. Once baked, the loaf should rise slightly above the bread pan rim for a nice shape.

Bread Ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill)
  • Fine salt
  • Grapeseed oil (or other neutral vegetable oil)
  • Cold water
  • Instant dry yeast

How to Make White Bread in a Bread Machine:

1. Do not plug in the bread machine yet. Add 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour to the bread machine pan, then add 1 teaspoon fine salt and 1 tablespoon oil. Pour in 1 3/4 cups (about 410 ml) cold water. Place 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast in the yeast dispenser or in a separate compartment. If your machine has no separate yeast hole, simply add the yeast on top of the flour.

2. Plug in the machine and select a Basic or White Bread cycle, choose the larger loaf size (XL if available), and a medium crust setting. The cycle takes approximately 4 hours.

3. When the baking cycle finishes, let the loaf rest in the pan for 10–15 minutes. This brief rest helps the kneading paddle (the small “butterfly” piece) release from the bottom of the loaf when you invert it. Carefully remove the loaf and wrap it in plastic wrap, then cover with a towel while it cools to keep the crumb soft. Slice the loaf once cool and store slices in a sealed bag in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage. Enjoy!

A homemade bread that will replace any store-bought loaf. Only five ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 3/4 cups cold water (410 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast

Instructions

  • Don’t plug in the bread machine yet. Add 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour to the pan, then add 1 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon oil. Pour in 1 3/4 cups (410 ml) cold water and place 1 teaspoon instant yeast in the yeast dispenser or on top of the flour if the machine has no separate yeast compartment. Plug the machine in, select the Basic or White Bread setting, choose the larger loaf size and medium crust. The cycle takes about 4 hours.
  • When the loaf is finished, let it rest in the pan for 10–15 minutes so the paddle releases easily. Remove the loaf, wrap it in plastic, and cover with a towel while it cools to keep the crumb soft. Slice and store in a sealed bag in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze slices for longer storage.
