I always clean the lint trap after every use, but that alone isn’t enough. There are many hidden spots inside and behind the dryer—tubes, corners, and crevices—where lint and dust collect over time.

Cleaning beyond the visible lint screen improves dryer efficiency and reduces fire risk. I recommend performing a deeper clean a couple of times a year—you’ll likely notice faster drying times and less lint buildup.

Step 1: Clean the exterior and drum blades.

I wipe down the dryer about once a month with a microfiber cloth to remove dust from the exterior and the drum. It takes only a few minutes and is a good opportunity to clean the washer while you’re at it.

Step 2: Remove lint and clean under the lint screen.

The lint trap only captures the larger bits. Behind it is a tube that leads to the vent hose, and lint accumulates there over time.

On my Speed Queen, a single screw secures the lint housing. Remove any screws or clips and pull the lint screen assembly out to inspect and access the duct behind it.

You’ll often find more lint and dust than expected. Use a vacuum with a thin crevice tool to remove loose lint from the nooks and crannies, then follow up with a damp microfiber cloth or a small scrub brush (an old toothbrush works well) to remove remaining residue.

After vacuuming, I wiped the area with a multi-purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth. The difference is obvious: less lint and a cleaner surface for the filter to sit against.

Step 3: Wash the lint trap.

Wash the lint screen with warm water and a mild detergent or dish soap to remove any residue from dryer sheets or fabric softener. Rinse well and let it dry completely before reinstalling.

A clean screen improves airflow and helps the dryer run more efficiently.

Step 4: Clean the vent duct.

Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Disconnect the vent hose by loosening the clamp with a flathead screwdriver. Inspect the hose and the wall duct for lint accumulation.

Remove loose lint by hand and discard it. For deeper cleaning, use a vacuum or a vent brush to reach further into the duct. Persistent buildup may require a longer vent brush or a professional duct cleaning service.

Dumping collected lint into the trash and following up with a vacuum typically clears most of the buildup.

Step 5: Clean the back of the dryer.

Wipe down the back and the area where the vent connects to the dryer. Some models allow removing the rear panel for deeper cleaning, but that can involve many screws—only do this if you’re comfortable with the process or consult your manual.

If you choose to remove the back panel, follow manufacturer guidance. If it’s difficult to access or requires many fasteners, it’s often fine to clean the accessible surfaces and call a pro for more involved maintenance.

Step 6: Clean the area around the dryer.

Vacuum the floor behind and beneath the dryer and wipe baseboards and walls. Reattach the vent hose, secure clamps, plug the dryer back in, and slide it into place.

With these steps complete, your dryer will run cleaner and more safely. Regular maintenance helps protect the appliance and extend its life, so take a little time now and then to care for it properly.

More Dryer Cleaning Tips

  • Perform this deep-cleaning routine once or twice a year depending on how frequently you dry clothes.
  • Skip fabric softener and heavily scented dryer sheets. They can leave residue on the drum and lint screen. Consider wool dryer balls to soften clothes without buildup.
  • Clean the lint trap after every load. Make it a habit to remove visible lint each time you run the dryer.
  • Avoid over-drying clothes. Excessively long cycles increase residue buildup on the drum and lint trap. Remove loads promptly when finished.
