Halloween Deviled Eggs are a fun, spooky appetizer: cracked dark shells reveal bright orange filling for a dramatic party bite. This easy make-ahead recipe is perfect with Halloween cocktails or as part of a holiday spread.

Halloween Deviled Eggs Recipe
Deviled Egg Ingredients
- 6 large eggs, hard-boiled
- 8 drops super black food gel
- 5 cups water
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon crème fraîche (or whipped cream cheese or sour cream)
- ½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 10 drops orange food gel or food coloring
- 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds for garnish

How To Make Halloween Deviled Eggs
1. Prepare hard-boiled eggs. You can boil them on the stove, use an Instant Pot, or steam them for easy peeling.
2. In a large bowl, mix the water and black food gel until the dye is evenly distributed. Wrap each cooled egg in a small towel, gently crack the shell all over with the back of a spoon, then place the cracked eggs into the black dye mixture so the dye seeps into the cracks.
3. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours so the color sets into the shell cracks.
4. Peel the eggs and slice them in half. To remove the yolks without tearing the whites, gently press the back of each egg half to pop the yolk out into a bowl.

5. In a medium bowl, combine the yolks, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, crème fraîche (or cream cheese/sour cream), salt, and pepper. Mash or beat until smooth. Add about 10 drops of orange food gel and mix until the filling is uniformly colored.
6. Transfer the filling to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or use a zip-top bag with the corner snipped). Pipe the filling back into the egg-white halves for a neat, festive look.
7. Sprinkle with black sesame seeds and keep refrigerated until serving. Arrange on a platter or in a deviled egg carrier for transport.

Deviled Egg Make-Ahead Tips
- Boil and cool the eggs in advance, then store halved egg whites covered on a tray in the fridge.
- Prepare the filling and chill it in a piping bag or sealed container so assembly is quick before serving.
- Fill and garnish the eggs right before the party for the freshest appearance.
Halloween Deviled Egg Variations
- Use different colors: green, purple, or black fillings for variety.
- Make olive “spiders” by placing a half black olive for a body and thin olive slices for legs.
- For an elegant option, top with crème fraîche and a sprinkle of caviar.
- Swap yellow mustard for Dijon for a different tang.
- Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder for more savory depth.
- Dye cracked eggs in orange, purple, or green dye and pipe a matching or contrasting filling.
- For pumpkin-themed eggs, dye whole shells orange and pipe an orange filling; garnish with a small parsley sprig as a stem.
- Garnish with fresh herbs, pomegranate seeds, or roasted pumpkin seeds for texture and color.

Deviled Egg FAQ
Deviled eggs trace back to ancient times and gained popularity in modern American cooking in the 20th century. The basic concept is simple: hard-boiled eggs with the yolks mixed with creamy, flavorful ingredients and piped back into the whites.
Boiled eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, paprika, salt, and pepper. The yolks are combined with mayonnaise (or crème fraîche, sour cream, or cream cheese) and mustard, seasoned, and returned to the egg-white halves. From there you can customize flavors and garnishes.
PRO TIP: Store finished deviled eggs in a covered container in the fridge. A deviled egg carrier is handy for potlucks and parties.
